It’s a relatively recent thing even in the US. It’s Awesome Most Hated Cafe Los Angeles Shirt first attested in the 1920s and didn’t become fully ingrained in culture until post-WWII (I’m assuming because of the rise of relatively safe suburbs with high concentrations of families with kids). I also doubt people were giving away candy during the Great Depression when a lot of people were just trying to not starve themselves. Here in the US, trick or treating kind of started becoming less of a thing where I lived as I became an older child. Now as an adult, we moved to the suburbs with our kid, and we were really happy that trick or treating is really big here and our neighbors go all out.

I’m American in Italy since the late 90s. In every Awesome Most Hated Cafe Los Angeles Shirts place, I’ve lived kids have come to my house because they know I’m American. We lived in Norway for three years, too, and we had loads of kids every Halloween. We just moved back to Italy before COVID-19 and I’m pretty sure no one knows we’re here. I don’t want anyone coming to my door because my dog is older and goes apeshit if anyone knocks or rings. There must be other people near you who also give out candy, why would they buy costumes and take the time to do it if it’s just your place.
