It’s the type of movie I’d happily watch on a Saturday afternoon. They’re just as dumb and action-focused as the Abrams films, but just not as well produced.

I think the current big problem with Pretty Vintage Middle School Teachers Love Brains Halloween Shirt Star Trek as a movie franchise is that movie executives are expecting these films to gross dollars, and anything less than that is a disappointment. Star Trek, try as they might, is still pretty nerdy. They can try making Star Trek movies with Star Wars and Fast & Furious directors, to appeal to a broader audience, but a lot of people still won’t see the movies because to them Star Trek is fundamental “nerd shit.” Yeah, it’s my “guilty pleasure” franchise and I enjoy it. I think it’s fairly obvious they overestimated the earning power of Star Trek and lost control of the budgets. I don’t think it’s a nerdy problem, though.
